Engineering Music – Composing a piece
- We will look at how music is constructed – both by studying pieces and writing our own
- The elements of music and how they are manipulated – Form, Melody, Harmony, Rhythm etc – how different styles of music use these techniques in different ways (what makes you categorize a piece in a certain style? because of which techniques?)
- students write thier own pieces
- students perform pieces (their own and/or someone else’s)
- if they are up to it, I could give them composition assignments (eg writing a fugue, a piece in sonata form, a twelve tone piece, a setting of a text as a song or programatic piece)
