Kalmar Nyckel – Now and Then
Categories: Defies Categories, Elementary School Kids, Week 4 (7/9-7/13)
- Instructor: Kathleen Shearer -I have taught grades 2 through college in my 34 year teaching career. I graduated from The Ohio State University with a BSEd and MA. I am a National Board Certified Teacher and past state finalist for the Presidential Award in Mathematics and Science Teaching. I am sailing crew on the Kalmar Nyckel and a ship's educator as I continue teaching in retirement.
All hands on deck! Spend a week with a member of the crew to learn about the ship and her crew as she was sailed in 1638 and today, 2012.
Monday – We will create a Captain’s Log and begin an overview of the week.
Tuesday – We will be at the Kalmar Nyckel Shipyard all day participating in ship activities with the crew to prepare for our sail on Friday.
Wednesday – Explore, examine and create maps. Pack a bag to go sailing on the Kalmar Nyckel – then and now.
Thursday -Learn about the captain and crew – then and now. Where do the sailors of the Kalmar Nyckel come from?
Friday – Finally! A 1 1/2 hour sail on the Kalmar Nyckel herself… will you remember what you learned on Tuesday? Be ready to work!
When we get to the end of the week will it be “8 Bells and all’s well”?
