The Life As An Explorer

Categories: Defies Categories, Middle School Kids, Week 4 (7/9-7/13)

Camp objective: Students will put themselves in the explorers’ shoes as they learn about famous explorers, design maps, and write fictional logs of their adventures. Highlights of the week include trips to the Kalmar Nyckel Shipyard and a voyage on a replica of the Kalmar Nyckel itself!

Weekly Schedule

  • Monday: Students will look at famous explorers and the voyage of the Kalmar Nyckel while getting acquainted with each other and the coming week.
  • Tuesday: We will take a trip to the Kalmar Nyckel shipyard! Students will get a chance to examine the ancient art of ship making. They will also learn many of the different roles that a ship’s crew would take.
  • Wednesday: WE will return back to Cab and work on creating fictional Captain’s logs. We will read some samples from famous sailors (as well as fictional ones). Students will then create their own journal detailing their own adventures. We will also attempt to make the journal appear old: a piece of history.
  • Thursday: Students will take today to design maps of their homes and community. We will first try to design them by memory, using tricks that mapmakers used. We will later use modern tools such as GoogleMaps and GoogleEarth to design new maps.
  • Friday: A voyage on the Kalmar Nyckel! Students will assume the roles of members of the crew. Be ready to work!

This camp is a fun, engaging week that allows students to really examine the lives of explorers who not only found eternal fame but changed the shape of the world forever.
